It's a clever system designed to improve efficiency and performance, and it all revolves around a 48V electrical architecture. Let's break it down.<\/p>\n<h3 >The Three Key 48V Components<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li ><strong>The 48V Lithium-Ion Battery:<\/strong> This is a small, compact battery, much smaller than one in a full hybrid (PHEV) or electric vehicle (EV). Its purpose is to store energy captured during braking and deploy it when needed.<\/li>\n<li ><strong>The Belt-integrated Starter Generator (BiSG):<\/strong> This is the star of the show. The BiSG replaces both the traditional starter motor and the alternator. It's connected to the engine's crankshaft via a belt and can do two things:\n<ul>\n<li ><strong>Act as a motor:<\/strong> It uses energy from the 48V battery to give the engine a torque-assist, making acceleration smoother and more efficient. It also enables a much smoother engine restart for the auto start\/stop system.<\/li>\n<li ><strong>Act as a generator:<\/strong> When you decelerate or brake, the BiSG uses the vehicle's momentum to generate 48V electricity and send it back to the 48V battery. This is called &#8216;regenerative braking'.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li ><strong>The 48V to 12V DC-DC Converter:<\/strong> This is the essential bridge. The car's main systems (lights, radio, computers) still run on 12V.
