The Constant Cycle of Charge and Discharge<\/h3>\n

Every time you start your car, use the lights, or listen to the radio with the engine off, you are discharging the 12V battery. In a traditional car, the alternator replenishes this charge. In an MHEV, this job falls to the DC-DC converter. A healthy converter provides a consistent, optimal charging voltage (typically 13.5V to 14.5V).<\/p>\n

How a Failing Converter Destroys a 12V Battery<\/h3>\n

A failing DC-DC converter can damage a 12V<\/a> battery in two ways:<\/p>\n

  1. Undercharging:<\/strong> This is the most common failure mode. The converter stops providing a charge altogether. The 12V battery is constantly being drained by the vehicle's systems and is never replenished.     If your vehicle's DC-DC converter has failed, installing a new 12V battery is only a temporary fix. You're putting a brand-new, healthy battery into a car that has no ability to charge it. Within a short period, that new battery will also be deeply discharged and damaged, and you'll be back to square one, but now you've paid for a new battery and still need to fix the root cause.<\/p>\n
