JLR Retrofit: Why the TCU is a Critical Part of an InControl Upgrade
Upgrading an older Jaguar or Land Rover's infotainment system—for example, from the basic InControl Touch to the more advanced InControl Touch Pro with Apple CarPlay—is a popular but complex modification. While most people focus on the new screen and head unit, a successful retrofit hinges on a third, often overlooked component: the Telematics Control Unit (TCU).
The Infotainment ‘Trio'
A modern JLR infotainment system is not a single unit. It's a system of interconnected modules:
- The Screen (IAM2.1): The physical touchscreen you interact with.
- The Head Unit (IMC): The ‘brain' that processes everything, usually located behind the dash or in the center console.
- The Telematics Module (TCU): The connectivity gateway.
Why is the TCU Necessary for the Upgrade?
The original TCU in a car with a basic InControl system is not compatible with the advanced features of InControl Touch Pro or Pivi Pro. To enable features like live traffic, online apps, and most importantly, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which rely on both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, you need a TCU that can support them.
Attempting to retrofit a new screen and head unit while keeping the old TCU will result in a partially functional system. You might get a nicer display, but you'll be missing out on all the connected features that make the upgrade worthwhile.
What's Involved in the TCU Part of the Retrofit?
During the upgrade, your old 3G TCU must be replaced with a modern 4G/LTE TCU that is known to be compatible with the InControl Touch Pro system. This ensures:
- Correct Communication: The new TCU can talk to the new head unit.
- Enabled Features: It has the hardware and software for InControl Remote, Live Services, and the Wi-Fi hotspot needed for CarPlay.
- Future-Proofing: You are installing a modern module that will be supported for years to come.
Warning: Infotainment retrofits are expert-level projects. They involve significant trim removal, potential wiring modifications, and extensive software coding to make all the new modules work together.
If you're embarking on an infotainment upgrade, don't forget the TCU. SX-Tool can help you source the correct 4G TCU to complete your project.
