Pivi Pro vs. InControl Touch Pro: A Head-to-Head on Map Updates

Jaguar Land Rover uses two recent generations of infotainment systems: the older InControl Touch Pro and the new Pivi Pro. While they may look similar, the way they handle navigation map updates is fundamentally different. Understanding which system you have is key to knowing how to update your maps.

InControl Touch Pro (Approx. 2016-2020)

If your Land Rover is from this era, you likely have InControl Touch Pro.

• Update Method: Manual, via USB stick.
• The Process: You must log into a web portal, download a large map file to a computer, use a special tool to prepare a USB drive, and then physically plug it into your car for a lengthy installation with the engine running.
• Pros: You have full control over when the update happens.
• Cons: The process is cumbersome, time-consuming, and prone to errors with USB formatting or file corruption.

Pivi Pro (Approx. 2020-Present)

Found in the new Defender, new Range Rover, and other recent models, Pivi Pro is JLR's latest-and-greatest system.

• Update Method: Automatic, Over-The-Air (OTA).
• The Process: The vehicle uses its built-in cellular connection (or Wi-Fi) to download and install map updates in the background automatically. It requires zero user interaction beyond initial permission setup.
• Pros: Effortless and convenient. Your maps are always kept up-to-date without you having to think about it.
• Cons: You have less control over the timing. The update relies on good cellular connectivity.

How to Tell Which System You Have

The easiest way is by your vehicle's model year. Post-2020 vehicles almost certainly have Pivi Pro. Visually, the Pivi Pro interface is generally faster, cleaner, and features a permanently docked side panel for shortcuts, whereas InControl Touch Pro often has a customizable ‘quadrant' home screen.
